Did the end of the year sneak up on you?

As the year winds down, many leaders feel the pressure to push harder, move faster, and squeeze in just one more thing before the calendar turns.

But the strongest leaders do something different. They pause. Not to slow momentum, but to reset it.

A leadership reset isn’t about starting over. It’s about taking an honest look at what’s working, what’s weighing you down, and what could work better with a little adjustment. This kind of reset doesn’t require a retreat or a big strategic overhaul. It starts with three simple questions.

  1. What Should You Keep?

Not everything needs to change. Before fixing what’s broken, identify what’s already strong — and commit to carrying it forward.

Some systems, habits, and leadership behaviors are doing exactly what they’re supposed to do. They create clarity. They support your team. They make your business easier to run.

Ask yourself:

  • What’s working smoothly right now?
  • What decisions felt clear and effective?
  • Where did the team show confidence and ownership?
  • What leadership behaviors helped people do their best work?

These are the things worth protecting.

  1. What Should You Drop?

Sometimes the fastest way forward is to stop doing what no longer fits. Every business accumulates weight over time. Extra meetings. Outdated processes. Unspoken expectations. Habits that once served a purpose but now just take up space.

Dropping something doesn’t mean you failed. It means you’ve outgrown it.

Consider:

  • Which meetings no longer add value?
  • What processes feel harder than they should?
  • Where are you saying “yes” out of habit rather than purpose?
  • What drains energy without delivering results?

Letting go creates room — for focus, for creativity, and for better decisions.

  1. What Should You Improve?

Improvement doesn’t require a complete rebuild. Often, small refinements make the biggest difference. Small improvements, applied consistently, reduce friction and build momentum over time.

Ask:

  • Where could communication be clearer?
  • Which systems would benefit from a tweak?
  • What expectations need to be better defined?
  • Where could you show up with more consistency?

Improvement is about progress, not perfection.

Reset with Intention

The leadership reset isn’t about adding more to your plate. It’s about making strategic choices.

What you keep reinforces what works.
What you drop creates space.
What you improve builds strength for what’s ahead.

As the year ends, give yourself permission to reset. Not by doing more, but by leading with clarity.

Because strong leadership isn’t about carrying everything. It’s about carrying the right things well.

Lead on,
