highschoolWPWhen I was in high school, I was best friends with two people, and good friends with probably ten others.

There were only 158 people in my class, not particularly big, but I at least knew everyone.

Out of those 158 teens I had a true connection with 12 people and no true connection with the other 146.

Now I write stories and business tips and send them to thousands. I hope that every one of the thousands appreciates the work.

That’s impossible.

I don’t gravitate to most things I see or read, why should you as one of my thousands? It’s got to be okay that most people don’t “get” you.

Same is true for you. Most people won’t get you. The part that makes you sad is too often those people are the very ones you want to “get” you so they do business with you.

You can up the percentages.

  • Don’t try to be everything to everyone.
  • Be very clear about what your “super powers” are and how they take away your Ideal Customer’s problem/pain/challenge/issue.
  • Remember your business isn’t about selling products, it’s not about product features, and it’s not about you…at all. It’s about your customer, their aspiration and their problem…that you cure.
  • And don’t try to be everything to everyone. Did I mention that? Oh, yeah, it’s #1 up there.

Your true connections will increase even while the size of your Ideal Customer candidates decreases.

Go forth and do great things,

Martha Hanlon and Chris Williams

P.S. Oh, yeah…and be nice to everyone else.
