If it seems to you as though the world is moving too fast these days, you’re not alone. Many of the senior managers and business owners we work with feel the same way.

Chaos comes for every leader. It might show up as shifting political winds, a sudden market shift, a key team member resigning, or an unexpected crisis that turns your well-laid plans upside down. If you’re leading a mid to large-sized service business, the stakes are high—clients depend on you, employees look to you, and the pressure to navigate uncertainty with confidence is real.

So how do you stay centered when the world around you feels anything but steady? How do you hold to your “center” when chaos threatens to pull you off course? Here are a few key principles that will help you lead with clarity, confidence, and calm even in the most turbulent times.

Steady Yourself First – Leadership starts from within. If you’re running on fumes, reacting emotionally, or feeling overwhelmed, that energy will trickle down to your team. Think of a pilot in a storm—before they can guide passengers safely, they have to trust their own instruments and training.

Take time to reset. Whether it’s a morning walk, a few deep breaths before a meeting, or a quiet moment with a cup of coffee, find small ways to ground yourself. When you’re steady, you create steadiness for others.

Stick to Your Core Values – When things get chaotic, it’s easy to react rather than lead. But your values—the ones that shaped your business in the first place—should be your anchor. Ask yourself, “Does this decision align with our core mission?”  If it doesn’t, step back and reconsider.

Simplify Where You Can – During turbulent times, complexity becomes your enemy. Simplify processes, streamline communication, and focus on what truly moves the needle. Instead of trying to tackle everything at once, identify the two or three most critical priorities and execute them well.

Over-Communicate with Your Team – Silence breeds uncertainty, and uncertainty breeds fear. Even if you don’t have all the answers, keeping your team in the loop builds trust. Be transparent about what’s happening, what you’re doing about it, and what’s expected from them.

Create a “Next Right Step” Culture – In chaos, leaders often feel pressure to have everything figured out. But the truth is, you don’t need a perfect five-year plan during a storm, you just need to take the next right step. Encourage your team to adopt this mindset. Instead of getting stuck in paralysis over what might happen, focus on what can happen today. Small, consistent actions add up to big results, even in uncertainty.

Look for the Opportunity – Times of chaos often come with hidden opportunities. Some of the best business pivots and innovations have come from moments of crisis. Instead of seeing turbulence as purely negative, ask, “What is possible now that these changes are happening?”

Leading through chaos isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about staying steady, staying true, and taking the next right step. Your team will remember how you led them through uncertainty more than any perfect plan you could have crafted.

So, take a deep breath, trust your foundation, and lead on. The storm will pass, but strong, steady leadership will last.
